Now Viewing: rilakkumaTag type: Character A popular small bear mascot created by San-X and designed by Kondo_Aki in 2003. He is a brown bear with small black eyes and has a zipper on his back. His name is a portmanteau of the Japanese pronunciation of the English word relax and the Japanese word for bear, Kuma. As his name suggests, he is fond of relaxing and he is often depicted doing laid-back activities like eating sweets, lying around, watching television, enjoying the hot springs, etc. He often hangs out with Korilakkuma and Kiiroitori. Kondo was inspired to create Rilakkuma after she saw a TV show about pets. Stressed out from work at the time, she felt a desire to own a pet and live a more relaxing life; Rilakkuma was born out of this desire. Rilakkuma was adapted into a stop animation series for the first time on April 19, 2019 with Rilakkuma_and_Kaoru, a slice of life anime that stars Rilakkuma and his human caretaker Kaoru.
