It is a Japanese phantom thief action adventure comedy manga series written and illustrated by Kazuhiko Kato under his pen name, Monkey_Punch. The original manga premiered on August 10, 1967 and since then, the series expanded into a massive multimedia franchise that has never stopped. It follows the escapades of master thief Arsene_Lupin_III, the grandson of Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief of Maurice Leblanc's series of novels. The franchise has a loose continuity with entries being stand-alone stories with a few occasional references to other installments. While the characters fulfill the same story roles in each incarnation, their characterizations are malleable with each creator having their own interpretation of the characters. Accordingly, the tone of the series can vary wildly depending on the incarnation, with some installments being light-hearted and family friendly while others are much darker and more adult. However, the franchise is very consistent when it comes to its voice cast. The franchise has almost never changed its voice actors, keeping the same ones throughout multiple decades unless it's forced to change them by outside circumstances. This has led to its seiyuu becoming some of the highest paid voice actors in the business. The franchise typically features a jazz soundtrack, often composed by Ohno Yuji who came up with the franchise's iconic theme and defined the series' sound in the second Lupin III anime series. Despite the franchise's connection to Leblanc's Lupin novels, it is treated as a separate franchise and not a true sequel. This connection actually caused legal/copyright troubles as Monkey Punch hadn't asked for permission to use Lupin's name and when Leblanc's estate found out about the franchise, they launched legal action in Japan. This has led to the franchise and its characters going by different names when exported to other countries.
