Now Viewing: recorderTag type: General A end-blown wind instrument. It is played perpendicular to a person's lips through a mouthpiece called a fipple or block. It has a slightly tapering body with eight finger holes and can come in a variety of colors. The name comes from one of the meanings of the word record, which is "to practice a piece of music." It is not to be confused with a fife, which is played parallel to a person's lips, and has no mouthpiece—it has an embouchure hole which is blown across to produce the sound. The recorder is a part of Japan's elementary school curriculum. "Recorder" is also not to be used for sound recording equipment or devices.
