He is the son of Robert Downey Sr. and made his feature film debut at the age of 5 in one of his father's films, Pound, and has been acting consistently since then. While he has consistently received critical praise for his acting, his drug and alcohol abuse problems gradually overshadowed his acting accomplishments, which led to run-ins with the law and damaged both his personal and professional life. In 2001, he finally decided that enough was enough and began working harder at quitting his addictions and went back into acting with the help of his friend Mel Gibson. He also credits his wife, producer Susan Downey, for helping him become sober. In 2008, he landed his most famous role, which both fully revived his acting career and made him into a highly paid leading man, Tony Stark/Iron Man. His portrayal of the character was so well received that it also re-popularized Iron Man and influenced subsequent comic portrayals of the character. He is often seen as being close to a real life Tony Stark due to the character's personality and personal issues mirroring his own. He is also known for being quite good at improvisation and many of his ad-libs, especially in the first Iron Man movie, ended up being used in the final cut.
