美少女戦士セーラームーン (Bishoujo Senshi Sera Mun), officially translated as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, is the title of a franchise created by Takeuchi_Naoko and is her most famous work. Tag refers to images referencing this franchise. It is generally credited with popularizing the concept of a team of magical girl warriors who battle various enemies who threaten humankind. This concept was inspired by the Super Sentai franchise, which Takeuchi was a fan of, and Sailor Moon is essentially a genre blend of a sentai series and a magical girl. The sentai magical girls are called Sailor_Senshi.

Sailor Moon was adapted into an anime in 1992 by Toei. The first season was directed by Sato Junichi and subsequent seasons were directed by Ikuhara Kunihiko except Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, which was directed by Igarashi Takuya. Arisawa Takanori composed the soundtrack.

The franchise began with the magical girl comedy Codename: Sailor_V, which centered around Sailor Venus/Aino Minako. In the context of the franchise as a whole, the manga functions as Aino's backstory. The manga began in 1991 and focused on how Aino Minako became a magical girl and her battles against the Dark Agency. Shortly after Sailor V debuted, Takeuchi began work on the spinoff/sequel manga Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, which also debuted in 1991 and lasted until April 1997. Sailor V had not been finished yet when Sailor Moon began and for the next few years, Takuechi worked on both series at the same time. However, she primarily focused on Sailor Moon, resulting in Sailor Moon being considerably longer. Even though Sailor V had fewer chapters, the chapters were released sporadically until the manga's conclusion in 1997. The later chapters of Sailor V also establish stronger links between Sailor V and Sailor Moon by having the other Sailor Senshi make cameos in Sailor V as well as foreshadowing Aino's role in the Sailor Moon series. At one point, an anime for Sailor V was planned, but it never materialized whereas Sailor Moon was adapted into an anime. Quite a few members of Sailor V's cast also resemble prototypical versions of Sailor Moon's cast.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is comparatively more serious in tone than its mostly humorous predecessor. It is set one year after Sailor V's events and tells the story of Tsukino Usagi, a bumbling and carefree teen girl, who becomes a magical girl after she rescues the talking black cat Luna from some bullies. Luna tells Usagi that Usagi is the reincarnation of Sailor Moon, a warrior of the lost ancient Moon Kingdom and who is destined to save Earth. Usagi is skeptical of these revelations but she is soon roped into fighting various monsters who plan on enslaving and ruining humanity as well as searching for the reincarnation of the Moon Princess. Usagi struggles in her early battles and often seems to be a clumsy crybaby but she gradually grows into her role as a heroic defender of humanity. She amasses a group of fellow Sailor Senshi, forming a strong team with them. She also becomes involved with a mysterious male protector named Tuxedo Mask who also does battle with various monsters. As Usagi and her friends grow as magical girls, they deal with increasingly powerful enemies and also learn that none of them are the normal teen girls they thought they were. . .

While there are male heroes and villains, the series notably makes most of the main heroes and villains female.

The series has an astrology based naming scheme. This was influenced by Takeuchi's initial plan to create a series involving girls in space, but her editor asked her to place her main characters in the now iconic sailor fuku outfits. The series was originally intended to last one story arc, but her editors told her to continue and the series ended up with five major story arcs.

Along with Dragonball Z, this series was notably one of the most internationally successful anime/manga of the 1990s. Whereas Dragonball Z was the most widely recognized anime/manga targeted towards boys, Sailor Moon was the most widely recognized anime/manga targeted towards girls and is often credited with creating many female anime/manga fans. Like Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon's North American localization made quite a few changes. The characters' names were altered to English ones, a new soundtrack was composed, and some of the content of the original series was toned down, notably Haruka and Michiru's lesbian romance. Their relationship was changed to the two of them being cousins and the most overt indications that the two were in love with each other were removed. However, fans note that even in the toned down dub, their interaction was still charged with homoerotic subtext and, thanks to the dub making the two of them cousins, accidental incest subtext. The final season Sailor Moon Sailor Stars was never localized.

Popular spinoffs include the Sailor_Moon_Musicals which are theater productions and Pretty_Guardian_Sailor_Moon, a live-action take on the series. It has also been received multiple video game adaptations, some of which are 2d beat em up games. There is also a Japanese RPG called Sailor Moon: Another Story.

On the 20th anniversary of the franchise, another anime adaptation was announced, but production of the series was delayed. It is now titled Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal and premiered on July 2014.

Note: Only use Sailor Senshi tag when more than one senshi is present.

While the anime and manga have quite a few differences, each anime season roughly corresponds to one manga story arc:

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon ------------------>Dark Kingdom arc
Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailor_Moon_R ---------->Black Moon arc
Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailor_Moon_S ---------->Mugen Arc
Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailor_Moon_SuperS----->Yume Arc
Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailor_moon_Sailor_Stars Stars Arc
