Now Viewing: drunken_masterTag type: Copyright (醉拳) Tag refers to images referencing the iconic 1978 Hong Kong martial arts comedy film starring Jackie_Chan and Yuen Siu-tien. The film was directed by Yuen's son Yuen Woo Ping. The film's original Chinese title is 醉拳, which translates to Drunken Fist. The film was followed by two sequels with a different cast and crew although the first sequel once again stars Chan. The film is a spiritual successor to Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, another martial arts comedy with the same stars and director. Wong Fei Hung is a talented but irresponsible young martial artist. Instead of focusing on self-cultivation, he spends his days finding ways to weasel out of his training, flirt with women, and getting into all sorts of fights and misadventures. One day, his antics end up angering his aunt, cousin, and the most influential man in his town. Wong Kei-ying, his father, is finally fed up with his son's behavior and decides to punish him by having the infamously harsh and eccentric martial arts teacher Beggar So teach him martial arts instead. Fei Hung again tries to escape from training, but ultimately ends up being forced to endure So's rigorous training. However, Fei Hung gets a wake-up call when he has a run-in with a ruthless assassin named Yim Tit-san who easily defeats and humiliates him. Humbled by the experience, Fei Hung decides to take his training by So more seriously and the film follows the duo's adventures as Fei Hung learns So's special art of Drunken Boxing. The film is notable for popularizing Drunken Boxing in pop culture as well as establishing Jackie Chan as a big film star, breaking him free from his previous box office poison reputation and showing his trademark mix of martial arts action and comedy can be successful amongst critics and audiences. The film also has a more comedic interpretation of two Chinese folk heroes/historical persons who were famous for their martial arts exploits: Wong Fei Hung and Beggar So. Many portrayals of Drunken boxing in anime/manga/video games are directly inspired by this film. Tekken's Lei Wulong takes many moves directly from this film and its 1994 sequel. Siu-tien also became a big star after this film and appeared in multiple martial arts films afterwards. Unfortunately, he passed away a few months after this film was released. Nevertheless, his likeness was used as the basis for the King of Fighters character Chin Gentsai.
