An ultraviolent and grim chanbara action/drama manga created by Yamaguchi_Takayuki, his second manga after the just as violent Kakugo no Susume. The manga ran from August 2003-2010 and is an adaptation of Nanjo Norio novel Suruga-ju Gozen Jiai, specifically an expansion of the novel's 1st chapter. It was adapted into an anime TV series by Madhouse that ran from July 19, 2007-October 12, 2007. The anime was directed by Hamasaki Hiroshi and written by Minakami Seishi. It is set in 1629 Shizuoka during Tokugawa Tadanaga's rule and begins chronologically towards the end of the story. The daimyo is staging a lethal tournament where the participants will fight with real swords as opposed to bokken. The first match is between two disabled swordsmen, Fujiki Gennosuke and Irako Seigen, who were part of the same dojo Kogan-Ryuu. The series then goes backwards in time showing how these two men's lives intertwined and everything that led up to their ultimate battle to the death. The series has a strong attention to detail, particularly when it comes to the human body with many shots of the characters' muscles and inner workings as well as the destruction of their bodies. The series has a very dark tone, portraying the setting in a very un-romantic and brutal light with no traditionally heroic characters.
