Now Viewing: kemono_friendsTag type: Copyright けものフレンズ A moe multimedia franchise created by Mine_Yoshizaki that centers around cute humanized animal girls known as Friends who reside in a giant safari park called Japari Park. Most of them are based off of real animals. It originated as a smartphone game developed by Nexon that debuted on March 2015 and lasted until December 2016. It was then adapted into a manga by Furai that ran from July 2015 to March 2017. It was adapted into a CG anime on January 2017. The anime is directed by Tatsuki and written by Tanabe Shigenori with a soundtrack composed by Tateyama Akiyuki. The anime recasts all of the characters from the game with new seiyuu. It has been adapted into a stage play and a smartphone game that is separate from the original. However, later revelations imply that the anime is actually a distant sequel to the game's events The anime adaptation tells the story of a girl named Kaban who ends up in Japari Park. She has no recollection of who, what she is, or how she got to Japari Park in the first place. She piques the interest of Serval, an energetic and mischievous Friend, who dubs her Kaban (Bag) after the bag she carries and volunteers to help Kaban find out what kind of Friend she is and recover her memories. Together, the two embark on a safari where they encounter and help out a variety of Friends and battle against the malevolent alien Ceruleans. For commercial breaks, the anime features an educational segment where a real-life zookeeper introduces an animal that the current episode's Friend is based off of. The franchise is notable for its dark horse memetic popularity. Prior to the anime, it was an obscure and seemingly unsuccessful property. The original game only had a short run of one year before it closed down a month before the anime debuted. The anime itself also suffered setbacks with the main one being its low budget. Besides the voice actors, only 10 people worked on the anime with the production lasting 500 days. Furthermore, the adaptation was initially mostly ignored when it debuted, and was even criticized for having sub-par visuals in its opening episode. But against all of these odds, the series gradually accumulated popularity, becoming the most well known incarnation of the franchise, one of the most popular anime of the winter 2017 season, and its biggest surprise success, surprising even its creators who admitted confusion on how the show became such a phenomenon. The anime's first episode has the honor of being the most-viewed first episode of any anime in Nico Nico Douga history garnering 9,340,000 views within seven months. Thanks to the anime's success, Tatsuki and his staff were credited by fans for making the franchise successful, so when Kadokawa Shoten, the company that owned the rights to the series, suddenly decided to replace Tatsuki for the second season, the company was met with intense backlash, including the resignation of the anime staff and the company's stock prices dropping 3.3%. Shoten followed through with their plans for the second season, which was directed by Kimura Ryuichi and written by Masumoto Takuya instead. The second season also replaced Kaban with a new character, Kyururu. The second season ran from January 14, 2019 to April 1, 2019. However, the second season was not able to dispel the controversy sparked by the behind the scenes drama of its pre-production. The second season received a substantially less positive reception than its predecessor, and the season's producer Hosoya Nobuyuki exacerbated this reception by responding negatively towards its critics. This culminated in him being forced to apologize for his behavior and led to his transferring away from anime-related work, tarnishing his anime career.
