Now Viewing: yamada_naokoTag type: Artist 山田尚子 A female animator and director born in Gunma Prefecture on November 28, 1984 who is notably one of the few prominent female anime directors. She is most well known for directing the K-ON! anime adaptation and Tamako_Market. She is also sometime credited as Ando Ryuu. She loved drawing ever since she was a child and her earlier art experience involved copying images from Dragon Ball and Patlabor. In high school, she joined the photography club and studied oil painting at Kyoto University as well as joining their special effects club. She contemplated a live action film career but decided to become an animator after seeing a pamphlet advertising Kyoto_Animation. Upon joining the studio, she was put to work as an in-between animator on Inuyasha. She was mentored by both two of Kyoto Animation's more prominent directors, Ishihara Tatsuya and Takemoto Yasuhiro, and worked as an animator on many of the shows they directed. From there on, she steadily rose the ranks and made her debut as main director with K-ON! and has wielded greater creative control with each project. Notably, she storyboarded all of Tamako Love Story herself as well as directing the film. She worked at the studio until 2020, when she decided to move to Science_Saru and continued her directing career there. Although she ended up becoming an animator, film and photography are still large influences on her as she often employs visual techniques usually associated with live-action film in her anime work and uses photos for reference. She is known for her strong focus on characters' legs as a way of expressing the characters' emotions through the way their legs are positioned or move. She often does slice of life stories that revolve around growing up. Her works often have female-dominant casts. She is very focused on characterization as she feels that the most important part of being a director is to observe people and pay attention to their mindsets. As a director, she almost always works with female anime screenwriter Yoshida Reiko and frequently works with composer Ushio Kensuke who provides her anime with quiet, ambient soundtracks. She won the New Face Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival for her work on Tamako Love Story.
