Tumblr is a social networking website that allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short blog.

Uploading
Tumblr has reduced-size versions of its images known as tumblr_samples, none of which should be uploaded here. All JPG images and all PNG images above 1280 pixels wide or 1920 pixels tall that are uploaded to Tumblr become samples. These samples which are in the URL may carry one of multiple available file name suffixes:

_75sq (sample; thumbnail)
_100 (sample; thumbnail)
_250 (sample)
_400 (sample)
_500 (sample; sometimes original)
_500h (sample; height-bounded)
_540 (sample)
_1280 (sample; sometimes original)

The method for obtaining original images from Tumblr has changed a number of times over the years. At one point all that was necessary was changing each image's URL, but now the process is somewhat more inconvenient. Here is a step-by-step guide.

Note: If the image you wish to upload is a PNG that is both less than 1280 pixels wide and less than 1920 pixels tall, then obtaining the original image is unnecessary as it will be visually identical to the sample.

0: Create or log in to an exisiting Tumblr account.
1: Reblog the Tumblr post(s) containing the image(s) you wish to upload.
2: Go to www.tumblr.com/settings/account and, under the list of settings to the right, click on your blog (the one you reblogged the post to). The URL for this page will look like this:
www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/blog_name_goes_here
3: At the bottom of this page, you should see an option to export your blog. Click the "Export blog_name_goes_here" button.
4: Once Tumblr is finished preparing your export, you will be able to reload the page and download your blog backup. If you only reblogged one or two posts this should only take a few seconds, but it will take at least a few minutes if you have reblogged a large number of posts.
5: The ZIP file that Tumblr provides should have a folder titled "media". In this folder will be every static image, GIF and video at their original size/quality from all of the posts on your blog - including reblogs.
