Cocona is a normal teen girl who lives alone with her grandmother and her pet bunny Uexkull. She's at a crossroads in life: her school has begun asking about students about their future career plans, but no matter how hard she thinks, she is unable to think of anything. One day, she meets an eccentric and hyperactive girl named Papika who immediately takes an interest in her, insisting that Cocona join her on an adventure. Cocona tries to refuse, but ends up being dragged into Papika's quest and the mysterious organization the girl works for: Flip Flappers. The Flip Flappers are traveling to alternate dimensions, called Pure Illusion, which contain special amorphous fragments that when combined, will grant a person anything he/she wishes. Papika and Cocona prove to be a highly compatible duo and are able to synchronize and become magical girls. But they aren't the only ones searching for the shards; they must contend with a rival trio of magical warriors sent by a cult bent on world conquest. The series uses the alternate dimension nature of Pure Illusion to give almost every episode a different feel or genre, depending on the world the heroines are in. One episode can be an action-packed homage to shonen action series while another can be a full-on horror story. Each episode follows this naming pattern: Pure _____.
