Now Viewing: super_mario_odysseyTag type: Copyright A 2017 3D platformer entry in the Super_Mario_Bros. franchise. It was released on October 27, 2017 for the Nintendo Switch. The game was directed by Motokura Kenta and produced by Koizumi Yoshiaki and Hayashida Koichi. The soundtrack was composed by Kubo Naoto, Fujii Shiho, and Kondo Koji. The artwork was handled by Yoshida_Rikuto, Mineta_Naoki. and Murata_Sho. Bowser is once again trying to kidnap Princess Peach, this time with the explicit intention of marrying her. Mario steps up to stop him on Bowser's airship, but his rescue attempt fails thanks to Bowser having acquired new abilities thanks to his newfound top hat. Mario falls from the ship and loses his trademark hat, but a small piece of the hat is found by a hat-shaped ghost named Cappy. Mario learns that Cappy is looking for his sister Tiara who has been kidnapped alongside Peach. Bowser has also ravaged Cappy's home kingdom of Bonneton, and is in the process of doing the same to other kingdoms. United by a common goal, the two of them team up, using the airship Odyssey to travel around the world to catch up to Bowser and stop his wedding. The game is thematically built around hats with many characters now donning headwear of some kind, an airship shaped like a hat, and characters who are living headgear. Mario's new partner Cappy gives Mario access to new abilities: He can throw Cappy at enemies as a weapon, use him as a platform, and use him to possess other characters and some inanimate objects. The game is built around making use of Cappy's possession and platforming abilities. Many sections that are normally require Mario to possess a character can actually be bypassed by a player who makes skillful use of Cappy's platforming, which allows for Mario to chain together jump combos that can make him go higher and farther than he ever has before. The game also rewards such players by stashing coins in seemingly out of reach places. In contrast to the previous linear obstacle course style 3D Mario platformers, this game returns to the open-ended exploratory style platforming that Super Mario 64 popularized, with the gameplay revolving around finding the Power Moons to power up the Odyssey and giving Mario the ability to venture into new worlds. Unlike SM64, the game doesn't kick the player out of the level once they find the Power Moon, making exploring each level a continual experience. The game also does away with the series traditional 1-ups and game overs. Dying merely results in the loss of money. However, this game has 2d throwback sections in the form of flat zones. When Mario enters certain warp pipes, he will be turn into his 8-bit Super Mario Bros. form and go through a 2d platforming section that takes place on a wall, mountain, building etc. The game also has many throwbacks to past Mario games, including Mario's first game, Donkey Kong. This Mario installment is notably more varied in art style than other Mario games. While the game still predominantly uses the series' trademark cartoony style, there are also characters who are rendered in a more realistic style, such as the NPCs of New Donk City. This is also the first main Mario game to feature vocal music, performed in-universe by Pauline, who is voiced by Kate Higgins. The game also has a snapshot mode that works quite similarly to Super Smash Bros. pause screen, allowing the player to rotate the angle. However, this game also gives the player to add filters to their photos. The game received virtually universal critical acclaim upon release. The game was also a massive financial success, selling two million copies within 3 days of its debut, and became the fastest selling Mario game in North America and Europe.
