It started as a 1990 novel written by Michael Crichton. It was adapted into a 1993 film directed by Steven_Spielberg, written by Crichton himself and David Koepp, and scored by Spielberg's associated composer John Williams. This incarnation of the franchise became the most popular although it made many changes from the novel. Both the original novel and the film received sequels, but due to the numerous differences, they are split into separate continuities. The novel and film revolve around the creation and the ensuing legacy of the eponymous Jurassic Park, a wildlife park that showcases living dinosaurs, recreated by genetic engineering. The park, located on Isla Nubar, was created by billionaire John Hammond, but before this revolutionary park can be opened to the public, it encounters some issues with its dinosaurs so paleontologists Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, mathematician Ian Malcolm, and lawyer Donald Gennaro are sent to ensure the park's safety and public viability. Upon arriving there, they are amazed at Hammond and his bioengineering team's ability to faithfully recreate the long deceased dinosaurs, but they soon find themselves fighting for their lives once the park's security is sabotaged by its chief programmer Dennis Nedry. The original book originated as a screenplay about a graduate student who recreates a dinosaur which leads to a formation of a wildlife park. Crichton later turned the script into a novel, only to end up writing a script for the movie adaptation. The novel and subsequent films were extremely successful with the original film grossing over 1 billion US dollars and winning Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. The franchise then expanded to include video games and amusement park rides. The franchise is known for popularizing and influencing future depictions of dinosaurs in pop culture, especially the T-rex and the Velociraptors. The 1993 film, which used a mixture of animatronics, CGI, and puppetry, to create its dinosaurs is responsible for helping popularize the use of CGI as a special effects tool.
