It was created by writer Derek Kolstadt and all of the films are directed by former stuntman Chad Stahelski, star Keanu_Reeves, and feature a soundtrack composed by Tyler Bates. The first film was released on September 19, 2014. Each installment of the film franchise is closely linked with each other with the films beginning almost immediately after its predecessor's conclusion. The character is tagged as John_Wick_(character). The franchise originated as a script by Kolstad titled Scorn. While the main premise was the same, Wick was originally intended to be an elderly man in his sixties. When Reeves, who was in his late 40s at the time, saw the script he became so passionate about it that he was ultimately cast as Wick himself and the character was changed to be slightly younger. Reeves was responsible for the change in title to John Wick as he would go around telling people that he was making a movie called John Wick that the filmmakers decided to just name the film after its protagonist. He also convinced Stahelski, whom he had previously collaborated with on The Matrix, to direct the film as he felt it would be something he would like. John Wick is a man who has recently lost his beloved wife to a terminal illness. Stricken with a mixture of grief, anger, and loneliness, he spends his days constantly mourning her. Things look up a bit for him when he receives a beagle named Daisy, a gift from his wife. However, his life is soon hit with another tragedy when Iosef Tarasov, the spoiled and hotheaded son of infamous mafia boss Viggo Tarasov, ambushes Wick and murders Daisy purely because Wick refused to sell his car to Iosef. This proves to be the last straw for Wick and Iosef's biggest mistake as the man soon learns that Wick is actually one of the most legendary and infamous assassins in the world and the one responsible for Viggo's rise to power and his foolish decision has caused Wick to end his retirement, Wick arms himself for his quest of bloody vengeance, but as he progresses further, he finds himself becoming further ensnared in the criminal underworld that he had previously worked so hard to retire from for the sake of his wife. . . The films are notable for their distinct style of gunplay, much of which is very close quarters. For the films, Reeves trained extensively with guns and martial arts with a focus on judo throws and grappling moves. Wick's fighting style is a mixture of all three elements. Reeves trained to the point that he actually became legitimately competent at handling guns. Reeves also performed the majority of the stunt work himself. The films make heavy use of the color blue to illustrate the coldness of the assassin underworld. Although the franchise is not a fantasy or science fiction series, it takes place in a universe that is like ours except it has a powerful criminal underworld/society with its own unique set of rules. The franchise is also closely associated with dogs, with dogs playing a significant role in each installment. Thanks to Wick's initial motive in the franchise, the series' protagonist has also become memetic symbol of justice for dogs. The film franchise's biggest influences were the movies The_Good_the_bad_and_the_ugly, Point Blank, Le Cerce Rouge, and 喋血雙雄 (known as The Killer in English). The first was a big influence on the series' minimalist style of delivering backstory: giving the audience hints of what happened in the past but no full explanation, and the others received various homages throughout the series. The franchise has been financially and critically successful with the first film being credited with resuscitating Reeves' acting career and a variety of new entries expanding the films' universe. Wick has become one of Reeves' most iconic characters and has made playable appearances in video games such as Payday 2. Fortnite has a playable skin that is not officially named John Wick, but is clearly modeled after him, The Reaper. The films style of action became particularly influential with many action-oriented works in the 2010s-2020s adopting the films brutal close quarters hand to hand combat/gunplay. The films raised the profile of 87eleven action design, the directors' stunt team, which would also work on many of the John Wick-inspired action films. It also has a spawned a comic prequel. While the franchise is otherwise unrelated, it notably features many actors and crew members who previously worked on The Matrix, such as Reeves, Stahelski, Laurence Fishburne, and Daniel Bernhardt.
