It is notably a return to the original timeline of the series after a gap of 11 years and was released on March 8, 2019 for PC, PS4, and XBOX One. It is also made by many of the crew members who had worked on the original series since Devil May Cry 2. The game was directed by Itsuno Hideaki and written by Morihashi Bingo. The characters were designed by Yoshikawa_Tatsuya and artwork was handled by Kinoshita_Kino. The cutscenes were directed by Shimomura Yuji. The soundtrack was composed by Suzuki Kota with vocal songs performed by Ali Edwards, Michael Barr, and Rachel Fannan. It has been a few years since Devil May Cry 4 and Dante's Devil May Cry business is falling on hard times, but it's saved by the arrival of the mysterious V, who offers Dante a lucrative job: help him deal with some demon attacks that are occurring around the world. Meanwhile, Nero has settled down with Kyrie and has opened his own branch of Devil May Cry with engineer Nico that operates out of a van. However, Nero is suddenly attacked by a mysterious man who amputates his demon arm, forcing Nero to rely on special mechanical arms, designed by Nico, to fight. Nero pursues the man to Red Grave City where he reunites with Dante and meets up with V. The city turns out to be the center of all the demon attacks and the situation has escalated to a demon invasion that is danger of turning apocalyptic. The demons are being brought there by a giant tree known as Qliphoth that is being grown by the demon Urizen who plans to make himself king of the Underworld. The three men team up to stop Urizen in what proves to be the most difficult battle of their lives. . . The game has three playable characters: Nero, Dante, and V, all of whom have different fighting styles. Nero, thanks to his new Devil Breaker arms, has a much more varied moveset than his previous appearance as each Devil Breaker gives him access to different abilities. V has a new fighting style in the series as he relies on the use of summons to do battle. Each character also has their own unique battle themes, which are now synced to the player's gameplay performance. The songs initially start off relatively quiet, but become progressively louder and add more instrumentation as the player's style ranking goes up. Once the player achieves a S rank, the theme's chorus will begin blaring triumphantly. The game runs on the RE Engine that was first used for Resident Evil 7. This gives the game a much more photorealistic art style in contrast to past games. This game is also the first game to be set after Devil May Cry 2, although during production the creators decided to retcon the timeline so that Devil May Cry 4 takes place after 2. Shortly before the game's release, a prequel novel titled Devil May Cry 5 Before the Nightmare, written by Morihashi, was released that fills in the gaps between 4 and 5. Both the book and the game have numerous references and call backs to almost every iteration of the Devil May Cry franchise.
