Now Viewing: final_fantasy_xvTag type: Copyright Tag refers to images referencing this installment of the Final_Fantasy franchise. It moves away from the turn-based RPG gameplay that most games of the series uses and is instead an Action RPG. It was released on November 29, 2016 for Playstation 4 and XBOX One by Square_Enix. It was directed by Tabata Hajime with artwork handled by Hasegawa_Tomohiro, Naora_Yusuke, and Kamikokuryo_Isamu. The story was written by Itamuro Saori, Ishibashi Akiko, Nishida Takumi, and Nojima Kazushige. The soundtrack was composed by Shimomura Yoko. Unlike the turn-based combat seen in most of the franchise, this game uses an active real time battle system though there is a Wait mode option that activates if the player does not input anything, allowing the player some time to decide on a strategy. The player controls the hero Noctis, while his friends are controlled by the AI. Characters also don't automatically level up once they reach a certain amount of experience points. Leveling up is handled by having the characters actually stop at Havens to rest. The game is set on the world of Eos, which is divided into four kingdoms: Lucis, Accordo, Tenebrae, and Niflheim. Tenebrae is ruled by Oracles, priestesses with the ability to communicate with the gods. The Oracles have to cure the Starscourge, a plague that absorbs natural light and turns its victims into Daemons. In spite of this crisis, the kingdoms of Lucis and Niflheim are stuck in a war with each other. The former's land has been steadily reduced to the city of Insomnia, but they still hold out thanks to its nobility possessing a crystal that gives them magical powers. After years of bloodshed, Niflheim finally offers a way to resolve the conflict peacefully: Prince Noctis_Lucis_Caelum will marry the current Oracle, Princess Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. Noctis sets out with his friends, Ignis Scienta, Gladiolus Amicita, and Prompto Argentum, to meet with the princess for the wedding. However, the offer of peace turns out to be trap, which frees Nilfheim to invade Insomnia. Noctis and his friends now must defeat Niflheim and find some way to stop the Daemons from overrunning the world. The game adopts an urban fantasy aesthetic with the characters dressed in contemporary clothes and generally using a car to travel around. Unlike most Final Fantasy games, the games' main party members are all male, and the story emphasizes the friendship and camaderie amongst them. The game is notable for its extremely long and troubled development. It was first announced in 2006. Back then, it was known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and was meant to be part of the Final Fantasy XIII universe. It was intended to be directed by Kingdom Hearts director Nomura_Tetsuya who also did the initial character designs. While some aspects of the game's initial concept made it into the final product, the early trailers were drastically different from the final game with the main plot in particular going through numerous revisions. One prominent character, Stella Nox Fleuret, was completely removed and retooled into Luna. Nomura eventually stepped down as director in the early 2010s and Tabata took over production from that point on. The troubles didn't end even when the game was released. After the game came out, DLCs were released that followed up on and fleshed out various characters, making them playable instead of the hero Noctis. However, not all of the planned DLCs were released, as Tabata himself left Square Enix. Nomura went on to incorporate some of his planned ideas for Versus XIII into Kingdom Hearts III. In spite of all the game's troubles, it premiered to generally positive reviews and sold over 8.9 million copies by October 2019. Noctis became a DLC guest fighter in Tekken 7 with his friends making a cameo in the Final Fantasy XV stage that came with his appearance. The game received a CG animated prequel film titled Kingsglaive:_Final_Fantasy_xv as well as a prequel anime OVA expanding the game's universe.
