The electronic soundtrack is composed by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Walfisch. The film was accompanied by the release of several short films filling in the gaps between the original and this one such as the anime Blade Runner Black Out 2022. This film is not an adaptation of any work and is a completely original story set in the film universe's continuity. It was released on October 3, 2017. It is set 30 years after the original film, and the conflict between the Replicants and humanity is as tense as ever. The film follows new protagonist, K, a replicant who hunts other replicants, a job that makes him hated by almost everyone. After one assassination, he finds a box that contains the remains of a female replicant who died during a Caesarean section suggesting that replicants are capable of giving birth. K is sent on a mission to find and assassinate this replicant child to prevent a potential war between humanity and the replicants. The film received generally positive critical reviews upon release and won numerous awards including the Oscar for Best Cinematography and grossed 260.5 million dollars worldwide, but like its predecessor, this was considered to be a box office disappointment.
