It is Type-Moon's most successful and longest-running franchise and the most famous work of Nasu_Kinoko's Nasuverse. It began in 2004 with the original visual novel Fate/Stay_Night, and the franchise has consistently released new installments/adaptations since then. Like the other entries in the Nasuverse, it is an urban fantasy franchise centered around superhuman and supernatural characters battling with each other in contemporary Japan. The franchise also shares magic rules and concepts with Nasu's previous entries in the Nasuverse. The franchise's conflict generally centers around the Holy Grail War, which is a secret battle royale fought amongst Master and Servant teams. The Masters are humans with varying degrees of magic proficiency who summon Servants, warriors based off of either mythological characters from around the world or actual historical figures whose lives have been heavily mythologized, to assist them in battle. Said warriors are divided into various classes such as Archer, Saber, Lancer, etc, that affects their abilities. The winner will be able to make a wish using the Grail. The franchise is split into a massive array of continuities, a trait that originated in the original Fate/Stay Night whose story eventually splits into three mutually exclusive story paths determined by the player's choices with no single 'true path'. The recurring characters of the franchise are consistent in terms of their character designs, core personality traits, and abilities, but due to the different continuities, their exact roles in the stories may shift. Some paths/installments reveal more about their characters while others may reduce them to minor players.
