It follows the Tanner family, who has just lost its matriarch. Danny Tanner is now a single dad who has to raise three girls: DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle. To help with raising them, he enlists two close companions, Jesse, the younger brother of Danny's deceased wife, and his best friend Joey. This new family live together under one house in San Francisco and the series follows their daily lives as they grow into a tight-knit family. The series notably had a polarizing reception with the series frequently receiving negative reviews from critics. However, it was a massive hit with general audiences with each season getting viewing ratings over 10, and it became one of the most iconic family sitcoms of the late 20th century. Its success launched the acting careers of its main cast. For Bob Saget, the success of the series gave him an image as a family friendly performer in spite of his background in raunchy stand up comedy. It launched the acting career of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen who notably played the same character, the youngest daughter Michelle Tanner. Instead of appearing on screen at the same time, the creators had the twins rotate playing the character. This rotating between actors was initially kept secret in the early seasons where the two of them were credited under one name, but was later publicly confirmed and the two were credited separately. This actor switching was also a way to avoid violating child labor laws. The cast became close to each other in real life, mirroring their characters, and would frequently spend time with each other outside of work. The series' long-standing popularity and the cast's closeness inspired the creation of a sequel set decades later called Fuller House which also reunited most of the cast and crew.
