The soundtrack was composed by frequent collaborator Tenmon. The characters were designed by Nishimura_Takayo. It was released on March 3, 2007. Shinkai later adapted his film into a novel by himself. The film also received another novel adaptation titled One More Side, which was penned by Katou Shinta who adapted Shinkai's previous films into novels. It has also been adapted into a manga and a live reading by the drama company Reading Love. It was adapted into a live action film that was released on October 10, 2025. It was directed by Okayama Yoshiyuki, written by Suzuki Fumiko, scored by Ezaki Ayatake and starred Matsumura Hokuto and Takahata Mitsuki as the main characters. The film is notably a full hour longer than the original anime. The film is a story divided into three parts, centering around the romantic relationship between childhood friends Touno Takaki and Shinohara Akari. The two begin their relationship as children in elementary school due to the two of them having so much in common that they feel like soul mates. Despite the already strong love the two of them have for each other, the two are forced to separate due to Takaki's family having to move to Kagoshima on the other side of Japan. As Takaki leaves, he promises Akari that the two of them will watch the sakura leaves together when they reunite. The film then follows how the long distance between the two lovers affects their relationship. With this film, Shinkai opted to tell a more grounded story, with no futuristic or fantastical elements like his previous films had. The film's title is a reference to the speed of which sakura petals fall to the ground, and is a metaphor of the film's main theme of how people's lives can drift apart.
