It was animated by Trigger_(company), the second anime of theirs to be based off of a non-Japanese property after their contributions to Star Wars Visions. The project was conceived by Rafal Jaki of CD Projekt Red, who wrote the early drafts of the anime's script. He had pitched the project to multiple anime studios that rejected his offer before Trigger accepted the project. It was directed by one of Trigger's founders and prominent directors, Imaishi_Hiroyuki who brings his trademark colorful, over the top, and hi-octane style to the anime. It was written by Otsuka Masahiko, another of Trigger's founders, and Usa Yoshiki who adapted Jaki's scripts into a format that they felt suitable for an anime. The characters were designed by Yoshinari_You. The soundtrack reuses quite a bit of music from the game but the new tracks were composed by famed video game composer Yamaoka Akira. It was released on September 13, 2022. It is the first anime installment in the Cyberpunk_(series), which started as a tabletop game and is visually inspired by the video game adaptation Cyberpunk 2077, being set in the same setting as said game, albeit a year before the game's events, and featuring much of the same technology filtered through Trigger's trademark style. CD Projekt Red, the developers of the game, collaborated with Trigger on the project and the anime was announced in the midst of the game's famously long production. The release of the anime was preceded by an update to Cyberpunk 2077 that added content related to the anime. Much like the game, the anime is targeted towards a more adult audience and features much more explicit violence and sexuality than most of Trigger's previous work. It is also much darker in tone than Imaishi's previous directorial efforts, being in more in line with the game. The series was broadcast with both Japanese and English dubs released at the same time. The latter utilizes a lot of unique slang terms that the original games coined. The anime's ending single Let you Down was released with a canon accompanying music video that serves as a prequel to the anime and focuses on a character who only appears in the video, Sasha. The MV was animated by Studio Massket and directed by Ilya_Kuvshinov in his second major cyberpunk work after previously designing the characters for Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex 2045 and is animated in his signature style as opposed to Trigger's. It is a stand alone story centered around new character David Martinez, a boy who goes to the upper class corporate-funded school Arasaka Academy. However, he is treated like an outcast there as he is actually much poorer than his peers and he and his mother are deeply in debt thanks to her insistence that he attend the school. Things get worse for David when he and his mother are caught in the crossfire of an assassination attempt and the two end up as collateral damage. After his mother dies from her injuries, David completely disengages from school and opts to get a cybernetic implant to find some other kind of path in life. One day, he has an encounter with a young woman named Lucy, a netrunner, and after seeing her in action, he decides he wants to do the same kind of work as her. His involvement with her leads him to join a group of cyberpunks/edge runners led by Maine. David works as an Edgerunner alongside Maine's team, making money by doing dangerous jobs around the city, and gaining notoriety as an Edgerunner. However, David eventually discovers that the odd jobs Maine's team have taken will lead them to be involved with the most dangerous people in Night City. . . In contrast to Cyberpunk 2077's launch, the anime received a generally positive critical and fan reception upon release with Cyberpunk 2077 receiving a significant increase in players. Franchise creator Mike Pondsmith also expressed approval over the anime. Lucy would go on to become a playable video game character herself as a guest character in Guilty Gear Strive.
