Released in Japan as Biohazard 3: Last Escape and the rest of the world as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the first half of the game is set before Resident Evil 2 and the second half of the game is set after that game. The game was released in 1999 for the Playstation and has been ported to the Gamecube. It was directed by Aoyama Kazuhiro and produced by Mikami Shinji. The story was written by Kawamura Yasuhisa. The soundtrack was composed by Ueda Masami and Maeda Saori. The game was developed at the same time as Resident Evil Code Veronica, but was released first because supervisor Okamoto Yoshiki wanted the Playstation games to have a consistent numbering scheme. Jill Valentine returns as the protagonist. Unlike the previous games, the game does not offer a choice of which character you want to play as, Jill is the only playable character although Carlos Olivera is briefly playable at one portion in the story. At the beginning of the game, Raccoon City has been completely overrun with zombies, and is beyond saving. Jill battles to escape from Raccoon City, but her task is made much more difficult with the introduction of the Nemesis, a near invincible and relentless Tyrant mutant created determined to wipe out all S.T.A.R.S.S members and cover up Umbrella's wrongdoings. The game itself is a lot like a side story and it is referred to the least out of all the canon games, but nevertheless, it was received positively, selling 3.5 million copies internationally by May 2008, and Nemesis has become one of the most well known Resident Evil villains alongside Wesker. The second live action Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil Apocalypse, is based off of this game. It has also been adapted into a novel in 2000 by S.D. Perry. The game also features the fixed camera system of the previous games, but gameplay is more dynamic and the scale of the game is increased. Jill is given a dodge maneuver, a 180 degree turn ability, and the ability to create ammunition. As opposed to spending most of the time indoors, Jill wanders the streets of Raccoon City and explores a greater variety of environments, and the game is set so that nine enemies can appear at the same time. The developers also improved their artificial intelligence so that enemies can pursue Jill up stairs. Jill can also interact with the environment and use it to damage enemies. It also features a Live Selection mode in which the screen will go white at certain points and the player will have to make a decision that will slightly affect gameplay. These generally happen when Nemesis ambushes Jill where the player is given the option to either run or fight. If the player manages to defeat Nemesis, s/he will be rewarded with plenty of ammunition. However, this is more difficult to pull off since Nemesis can endure a lot of damage and furthermore, defeating Nemesis does not prevent him from continuing to stalk Jill or preemptively end the game's conflict. Nemesis became a playable character for the first time in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Like its predecessor, the game received a remake that shifts the gameplay to an over the shoulder perspective and redesigns the characters. It uses the RE Engine that Resident Evil 7 ran on. The remake was released on April 3, 2020 for Microsoft Windows, Playstation 4, and XBOX One. The remake was directed by Sakata Kiyohiko, Seto Yasuhiro, Anpo Yasuhiro, and Ando Yukio. The artwork was handled by Cho Yonghee and Yuka Chi. The soundtrack was composed by Suzuki Kota and Kato Azusa, who provide a score that is closer to the original game than the previous game. The remake follows the general plot of the original, but some of the details are different. The game includes a new multiplayer mode called Resident Evil Resistance that pits survivors against masterminds, human villains who control bioweapons. The game received generally positive critical reviews.
