The franchise follows the adventures of Martin Riggs, a younger Caucasian detective who's a suicidal loose cannon but is kept on the force due to his skill at the job, and Roger Murtaugh, a middle aged African American family man cop who's feeling his age and tries to keep his partner and the situations they get into under control. It began in 1987 with the original film, which was directed by Richard Donner who directed every film entry in the series and starred Mel_Gibson and Danny Glover as Riggs and Murtaugh respectively. The original film was written by Shane Black and established his signature style of holiday-themed buddy detective movies that mix gritty action and snarky comedy. The orchestral and jazz score was composed by Michael Kamen who worked with two popular musicians, guitarist Eric Clapton and saxophonist David Sanborn, on the films' soundtrack. Each entry was a major hit with the original film turning Gibson, who was previously more well known in Australia, into a Hollywood A-lister, and giving Glover, who had mostly done supporting roles, more lead roles. Each entry notably escalates from the previous installment. Along with bigger budgets, come larger scale action scenes and each entry ups the comedy by adding new comedic relief characters. The film franchise notably had a consistent cast of actors with no recasts, even for the smaller roles. The franchise lay dormant after the fourth film in 1998, but was revived with a TV series that ran from September 21 2016 to February 26, 2019. It was developed by Matt Miller and starred Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans as Riggs and Murtaugh. The series had a generally positive reception but became notorious for behind the scenes troubles ironically centered around the two main stars who were never able to set aside their differences like their characters did. These troubles would contribute to the series ending after three seasons. The series is a major influence on Kojima_Hideo's visual novel Policenauts whose main characters strongly resemble Riggs and Murtaugh.
