He is introduced as a young boy with short black_hair, but spends the majority of the story as a muscular_male with a single flame over one of his eyes and flames over the rest of his body. He's often nude and the flames help censor his privates. He is an orphan who grew up alongside his sister Luna. The two of them are Blessed, humans born with special superpowers. The two of them are blessed with the power of regeneration but Agni's abilities are stronger to the point that he may be effectively immortal. Thanks to Agni's regeneration abilities, he's actually the main source of food for the village they grew up in since there are so few other resources that starvation has become a legitimate threat. Despite the harshness of their life, the Agni and Luna have hope because they have each other. The two siblings are so close that their relationship blurs the line between platonic familial love and romantic love. However, Agni soon experiences a lifetime of pain once Doma, a Blessed with the power of fire, and his fellow troops from Behelmdorg arrive at the village. Doma is disgusted once he finds out that the villagers are cannibals and chooses to destroy the village entirely. The only reason Agni survives Doma's inextinguishable flames is because of his regeneration powers and Luna urging him to live. Agni spends years getting used to his new physical state which causes him extreme pain every waking moment, and is psychologically haunted by Luna's last words, unable to understand why she urges him to live when he feels that dying would be preferable to what he now has to go through. Still, Agni is inspired to seek out Doma to enact bloody vengeance on him. Thanks to all of the suffering he has to endure, Agni has a perpetually somber personality and often tries to push others away. However, he ultimately lets others like Togata, a Blessed who wants to make a movie about him, and Neneto, a slave who Togata recruited to be a camerawoman, tag along with him. Agni is a highly powerful Blessed thanks to both his regeneration and the flames that Doma cursed him with. As his body is eternally burning, he is always generating heat around him. If anyone makes direct contact with him without wearing some protection, the flames from Agni's body will be spread onto their body and they will quickly burn to death. Only Agni's exceptional regenerative abilities allow him to survive Doma's flames. After receiving training from Togata, he becomes more skilled at using fisticuffs in combination with his Blessed abilities allowing him to pose a bigger threat to fellow Blesseds. A major element of the story is how various characters/factions perceive Agni. Some perceive Agni as a god who will lead humanity to salvation thanks to his perpetually burning body, miraculous powers, and stopping to help people who are suffering out. Others perceive Agni as a demon thanks to his frightening burning appearance and the destruction each battle he's involved with causes. Agni himself is aware of others' interpretations of him and is perpetually conflicted, torn between being urged to live while wanting to die, and between accepting himself as a symbol of hope while being tormented by guilt over some of his morally questionable actions. His sister Luna is one of the main motivations that keeps him going besides revenge, which turns into an obsession once he meets Judah, a grown woman who is the spitting image of what Luna would look like if she lived to adulthood.
