It was released on November 18, 1997. The game was made on a very tight schedule, being finished within nine months. In spite of Sonic being Sega's main mascot, this game was the only original Sonic game to debut on Sega_Saturn, and said console never received a mainline Sonic platformer. It was directed by Shiino Masamitsu and Richard Lloyd. The art was handled by Uekawa Yuji and Miura Yoshitaka. The game's power pop soundtrack was composed by Richard Jacques and notably consists of almost entirely vocal tracks. The vocals were performed by TJ Davis. Sonic Team designed the game's race courses while Traveller's Tales was in charge of the game's engine and programming. Sonic and Tails are about to take a break when they find out that Dr. Eggman is participating in a racing tournament called World Grand Prix to get his hands on the Chaos Emeralds. To foil his plan, Sonic and Tails decide to participate in the tournament themselves. Unlike other Sonic racing games, this game has Sonic and his companions, except for Amy Rose and Eggman, racing on foot, much like they do in the main platformers. The game was the first 3d Sonic racing game and was designed to use the Sega Saturn's hardware. The game received mixed to positive reviews from critics. However, this game was one of the reasons that the developers behind the Sonic franchise decided to produce more racing games starring Sonic with developer Yuda Takeshi citing that fans kept asking for more games like Sonic R.
