Now Viewing: castlevania_(netflix)Tag type: Copyright Tag refers to the Netflix animated adaptation of Castlevania_(series). Although the franchise was created by Japanese developers, this adaptation was created by an American studio, Frederator Studios. It is a gothic fantasy action adventure series that debuted on July 7, 2017 on Netflix and ran for four seasons, ending on May 13, 2021. It was directed by Samuel_Deats, written by famed comic book writer Warren Ellis, and scored by Trevor Morris. It is a loose adaptation of the games castlevania_iii:_dracula's_curse and Castlevania:_Curse_of_Darkness, borrowing the general premise and some characters and concepts from said games, but largely tells its own story. It was designed for an adult audience, so there is far more violence and profanity than the games. However, its style and aesthetic is heavily inspired by Japanese anime/manga with works like Berserk, Mugen No Juunin, Juubei Ninpuucho, and Vampire Hunter D, being cited as inspirations and the character designs are inspired by the work of the franchise's most popular artist Kojima Ayami. It is set in the Middle Ages of Europe in the region of Wallachia, which is haunted by the infamously brutal vampire Dracula. In spite of his reputation, aspiring doctor Lisa Tepes approaches his castle, because she has heard that he has access to knowledge and medicine that can help her people. Dracula is charmed by Lisa's spirit and compassion and the two of them become romantically involved with Lisa giving birth to a half vampire/half human son, Alucard. Dracula finds his heart softening thanks to his newfound family and agrees to Lisa's suggestion that he should travel the world to learn more about humanity. Unfortunately, this leaves Lisa vulnerable to corrupt priests who accuse her of witchcraft and burn her at the stake. When Dracula finds out what happened, he is so enraged that he vows genocide on the entire human race, a promise he follows up on one year later. As villages fall to Dracula and his vampire council's forces, the only hope for humanity lies in Trevor Belmont, a cynical vampire hunter whose family has also been unjustly disgraced by corrupt influences in the church, Sypha Belnades, a mage from an altruistic nomadic tribe called the Speakers, and Dracula's son Alucard. The adaptation was notably in development for a long time, even before Netflix became a streaming service, with plans for the series dating as far back as 2005. It was originally planned as a trilogy of animated direct to video films and producer Kevin Kolde and Frederator founder Fred Seibert tapped Ellis to write the script for said films. Ellis wrote his script to act as a way to expand on the franchise's setting and ideas as opposed to sticking the games' faithfully. The script was finished in 2008, only for production to suddenly stall for years, as the creators debated on how the series should be released with even a live action film version being considered. Finally, director/animator Sam Deats got the project going once he made a deal with Netflix to release the series there. The final product was largely faithful to Ellis' old scripts even though it was now a series as opposed to a film trilogy. The series is part of producer Adi Shankar's Bootleg Multiverse, along with his other adaptations of various properties. The series received widespread critical acclaim and high viewership on Netflix. It was followed by a sequel called Castlevania: Nocturne, which also takes similarly loose approach to adaptation.
