Now Viewing: mario_kart:_double_dash!!Tag type: Copyright A kart racing game that was released for the Nintendo_Gamecube on November 7, 2003. It's the fourth entry in the Mario_Kart series. It was directed by Oyagi Yasuyuki, Shirai Futoshi, and Imai Daiji. Nagata Kenta returned from Mario_Kart_64 to compose the score alongside Tanaka Shinobu. Morii_Junji handled the game's art. This game introduces a dual rider mechanic, hence the name Double Dash. Every player controls two characters riding one kart. Because there are now two characters on each car, the roster has become significantly larger than past games and the amount of items has drastically increased as each character is able to carry one item. As long as the player's kart has not been hit, players are able to switch who rides in the front and who rides in the back whenever they want. This mechanic is unique to this installment and has never been revisited in the rest of the Mario Kart series. However, this game introduced many elements that influenced subsequent Mario games. The game's increase in items contributed to making races even more chaotic with this game starting the franchise-wide recurring highlight of unfortunate players being comboed by multiple items in a row. Carrying two items at the same time was revisited in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. This game redesigned the blue_shell_(Mario) into its most famous and dreaded form that subsequent games kept: a homing explosive that flies towards the player in first place and detonates right on their head. This game also introduced Toadette, who became a recurring character in the Mario_(series) and redesigned Princess_Daisy, who, from this point on, was characterized as an energetic tomboyish young woman with shorter hair than Princess Peach. It also added Diddy_Kong into the Mario_Kart series, paving the way for the other Kongs to join the cast alongside Donkey Kong. The game was a major success financially and critically. It was the second best selling Gamecube game, selling 7 million copies, behind only Super Smash bros. Melee. It received generally positive critical reviews and won the Multiplayer Game award from ITV's Game Stars in 2004 and the GameCube Video Game of the Year award from the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA).
