The film uses 3d animation but still employs a lot of techniques from 2d Korean and Japanese animation. It was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks and released on Netflix on June 20, 2025. It was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the former of who came up with the film's story and concept. The film was written by Kang, Appelhans, Danya Jimenez, and Hannah McMechan Marcelo Zarvos composed the instrumental score while the vocal songs were written by Danny Chung, Ido, Vince, Kush, Ejae, Jenna Andrews, Stephen Kirk, Lindgren, Mark Sonnenblick and Daniel Rojas and produced by Teddy Park, 24, Ido, Dominsuk, Andrews, Kirk, Lindgren and Ian Eisendrath. The vocalists include Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, Andrew Choi, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee, Neckwav and Lea Salonga. Fitting the movie's inspiration, many of the musicians involved in the film's soundtrack are involved in the Kpop industry themselves such as Teddy Park, and Jeongyeon_(twice), Jihyo_(Twice), and Chaeyoung_(Twice) of Twice_(group) who sang one of the film's themes, Takedown. Although the film is an American production with an original English voice track, the creators aimed to make the film as authentically Korean as possible. The voice cast, including creator Kang herself who also has a small role, are mostly played by actors who are Korean-American or are from South Korea themselves. Kang saw the film as a way to pay tribute to her own cultural identity. The characters were designed with Korean features in mind and their mouths were animated to make only mouth shapes that only Korean speakers would make. The film tells the story of Huntrix, the latest generation of a trio of female demon hunters/musicians. Huntrix, and the demon hunters before them, are tasked with protecting humans from having their souls devoured by demons by maintaining a barrier known as the Honmoon, which they accomplish via the power of music. The hunters present themselves to human society as popular musicians with their performances both entertaining people and strengthening the barrier, and keeping their demon hunting a secret from the general public. Huntrix, which consists of Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, are the number 1 Kpop group in South Korea whose best-selling albums and concerts have kept the barrier strong. Their fighting skills and synergy are just as strong and they are so effective that the demon realm's leader Gwi-ma is frustrated over the demons' lack of success. However, one demon Jinu proposes a new plan. He and some of his fellow demons will form a boy band group that will compete against Huntrix. This new boy band will be a vehicle for the demons to consume human souls and weaken the Honmoon. The demons form a boy band called the Saja Boys who present themselves as human and become the biggest challenge to the Huntrix yet. The Huntrix quickly figure out that the Saja Boys are actually demons, but the boys just as quickly take South Korea by storm and threaten to weaken the Honmoon. As the Huntrix try to stop their new rival group, they are soon forced to confront personal insecurities that their enemies are willing to use to tear them apart. . . The film was a big success for Netflix, receiving generally positive critical reviews and becoming one of the top trending works on the streaming service shortly after debut. The soundtrack was the first 2025 film soundtrack to hit the top ten of Billboard 200, and has inspired actual Kpop groups to cover some of the songs' dances.
