Now Viewing: donkey_kong_64Tag type: Copyright A 3D collect-a-thon platformer released for the Nintendo_64 on November 24, 1999. It was developed by Rare and was the last main Donkey Kong_(series) game to be developed by them. It was directed by George Andreas with a score by Grant Kirkhope and art by Mark Stevenson. The Kongs' nemesis, King K. Rool, has decided to step things up in his latest plan against the Kongs. Not only has he kidnapped the Kongs, except for Donkey Kong, but he has also set up his new hideout with a superweapon that will completely wipe out Donkey Kong Island if he isn't stopped in time. Donkey sets out to save his friends and save his island from annihilation. With Donkey Kong's jump to 3d from Donkey Kong Country, the developers went for a similar gameplay style as Rare's other 3d platformer Banjo-Kazooie. In fact, much of the team that made said game worked on this one as well including director Andreas and composer Kirkhope. The game eschews the Super Mario Bros. 3 style world map of the DKC games in favor of a hub world like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie where the players would steadily unlock new locations by collecting golden bananas. From the hub world, the players will access the main levels, which are large 3d environments that encourage exploration to complete. This game notably has the vastest amount of collectibles of any 3d platformer, winning a Guiness World Record. This makes 100% completion take considerably longer even if not all of them are required to complete the main story. All of the playable Kongs are required to complete the game as each one has unique abilities that allow them to access areas that the others can't. The game is one of the biggest games to be released on the N64, notably requiring the Expansion Pak to be playable. The game received generally positive critical reviews, winning Best Platformer at the E3 Game Awards of 1999, and sold 5.3 million copies worldwide. The game's popular legacy has shifted in the years since its release with some arguing that this game was responsible for burying the 3d collect-a-thon platformer genre for years until the genre was brought back in the late 2010s with games like Super Mario Odyssey and A Hat in Time. The game's opening theme The DK Rap has had its popular reputation change over time with at one point being one of the more commonly criticized elements of the game before steadily becoming a beloved song and a significant source of memes. The song became one of the signature songs of the Donkey Kong series, being remixed in Super Smash Bros. and making an appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
