It's an military isekai action web novel written by Carlo Zen, a writer whose pen name is derived from the Venetian general Carlo Zeno. It ran from 2010 to 2017. It was adapted into a light novel that began on October 31, 2013 and illustrated by Shinotsuki Shinobu. A manga adaptation by Toujo Chika followed, beginning on April 26, 2016. It was adapted into an anime TV series by Studio Nut. The anime was directed by Uemura Yutaka and written by Ihara Kenta, and scored by Katayama Shuuji. The characters were designed by Hosogoe Yuji. The first season ran from January 6, 2017 to March 31, 2017 and was followed by a movie that released on February 8, 2019. The anime and the light novel have significantly different art styles. While the general appearance of the characters are the same, the light novel uses a muted faded look whereas the anime is more colorful with more exaggerated eyes and expressions for its characters. There are also various characterization differences amongst each version of the story. It tells the story of an unnamed ruthless Japanese HR manager who's murdered by a disgruntled laid off employee. Upon his death, he is brought to a god like being who he dubs Being X who's unhappy about humanity in general being less faithful than they used to be. When the salaryman angers Being X by refusing to believe in him and arguing that faith is no longer necessary, the man is punished by being reincarnated into a fantasy world locked in an eternal war. Said world is based off of World War 1 era Europe with battles fought in the trenches. However, there are also battalions with mage soldiers that have the ability to fly and use magic to augment their guns. The man is reborn as a blonde and blue eyed young girl named Tanya von Degurechaff who has strong magic potential. In spite of her new body and gender, she has all the memories and personality of her past life. Being X tests Tanya, claiming that if she doesn't come around and have faith in him before she dies or doesn't die of natural causes, she will be damned to hell for all eternity. Not wanting to die or concede to Being X, Tanya joins the Empire Mage Corps, utilizing her strategic genius and magic powers on the front lines to get a promotion to a desk job far removed from the field. The series was a big success, becoming one of the main hit isekai series of the 2010s with the novels having 6.5 million copies in circulation by May 2020. It became part of the crossover series Isekai Quartet, a crossover involving multiple popular isekai stories.
