Now Viewing: Star_Fox_2Tag type: Copyright A space opera rail shooter developed by Argonaut Software and Nintendo. It is a sequel to the 1993 Star Fox for the Super Famicom and is the last installment of the original Star Fox continuity before it was rebooted with Star Fox 64. The game reunites much of the crew from the previous game, but Ishikawa Kozue and Kanki Yumiko composed the score, emulating the style of previous composer Hirasawa Hajime. The game's art was handled by Arimoto_Masanao. The game continues directly after the original game. Andross, enraged by his defeat in the previous game, launches an all out attack on Corneria, complete with missiles primed to demolish the planet. The Star Fox team is called to action and must race against time to stop Andross before his missiles destroy Corneria. The game has an unique structure for a Star Fox game, taking inspiration from roguelikes such as 1985's Star Luster and adding elements of real time strategy. The player moves across the map, picking which planet they want to defend. However, once a level starts, things become more free-form as encounters are randomized. The player must also keep their eye on the missiles approaching Corneria, making sure the home planet doesn't take too much damage. The game also has a larger roster of playable characters that the player can cycle through as opposed to being limited to Fox McCloud for the main story. This game is unique in its franchise history for its unusual development and for its influence its had on subsequent entries. The game was meant to come out in August 1995 for the Super Nintendo, and almost did. However, Nintendo was worried about recent developments in 3D by its competitors. The Super Nintendo was on its last legs as a console and Nintendo feared that the game risked being seen as outdated when compared to what the Playstation 1 or Sega Saturn could offer. Nintendo decided to cancel Star Fox 2 even though the game was just about finished. The next Star Fox installment ended up being Star Fox 64 for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, which was a continuity reboot. Although Star Fox 2 was cancelled, Star Fox 64 and subsequent Star Fox games used many ideas that were introduced in it. The Star Wolf team, All Range mode, and the idea of transforming Arwings all had their roots in this game. Although the game wasn't officially released, a playable ROM of the game leaked on the Internet during the late 1990s. The game was finally made legally playable in 2017 with the release of the Super NES Classic on September 29, 2017. The producer of said system pushed for the game to be released because it would be a waste to never release an effectively complete game. Upon its much belated release, the game received generally positive reviews from critics.
