A symbol derived from the ancient German mark of the Sonnenrad or "Sun wheel". It was used by the Waffen-SS in their buildings and installations during World_War_II.

The symbol's design consists of a circle with twelve radial siegrunen (sig runes).

It first appeared in Nazi Germany as a design element in a castle at Wewelsburg remodeled and expanded by the head of the SS, Heinrich_Luitpold_Himmler (Heinrich Himmler), which he intended to be a center for the SS.
