Shutters may be mounted on the inside or outside of a window, and they may be fixed or hinged. Some shutters are purely aesthetic in design and may not cover the windows at all. Contrast with window_blinds, which hang freely instead of being set in a frame. Not to be confused with window_shadow, which are shadows created by a window.
