The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Magazine from August 23, 2006 to July 16, 2017. It is about the various adventures of the eponymous guild of mages. It was adapted into an anime on October 12, 2009 by A-1 Productions and Satelight. The anime series concluded on March 30, 2013. It is directed by Ishihira Shinji and written by Sogo Masashi. The music, which predominantly blends Irish violin music with rock, is composed by Takanashi Yasuhara. Character designs are done by Yamamoto_Aoi The second Fairy tail series began on April 5, 2014. The franchise got its own magazine titled Monthly Fairy Tail, which featured stories written and drawn by various mangaka set within the Fairy Tail universe and Fairy Tail Zero, a prequel starring Mavis Vermilion, written and drawn by Mashima himself, and has also been adapted into an anime. It is set in the world of Fiore, a land where magic is commonplace and numerous guilds of mages populate the land and provide jobs and income for mages. The setting is a mishmash of various time periods; wagons, trains, and boats are the dominant form of transportation whereas airplanes do not seem to exist. A few characters wear medieval knight esque armor, but many of the characters wear clothes that would not be out of place in a city or mall from the 2000s onwards. Lucy Heartfilia is an aspiring young mage who joins the eccentric mage guild Fairy Tail. Unlike newcomer Lucy, its members are a wild and quirky group of people and due to a combination of their magic and their hot tempers tend to cause a lot of destruction, but they are also one of the more tightly knit guilds in the land. Lucy comes to enjoy her time in Fairy Tail and forms a mage team and becomes close friends with Natsu Dragneel, Gray Fullbuster, Erza Scarlet and Happy. The series focuses on this group's various adventures, but they repeatedly encounter various mages who plan to revive the infamous Black Mage Zeref. Natsu himself also wants to find out what happened to his dragon caretaker, Igneel, who mysteriously left him seven years prior. Although most of the characters are mages, fights are often very physical with characters often getting up close and personal with fists, feet, or weapons as opposed to just chanting magical spells. It has many references to Mashima's previous series Rave Master though the two series are not related. Mashima, however, did create a one-shot crossover between the two series, which was eventually adapted into an anime by the creators of the Fairy Tail anime. This adaptation also expands on the original concept and brings back the original seiyuu of the Rave characters. The series also has quite a bit of both male and female fan service. Most male characters in the series are well built and handsome; main character Gray Fullbuster has an instinctive habit of undressing randomly. Most female characters are busty and have worn outfits that emphasize their attributes. The series' storyline places strong emphasis on friendship and true companionship. Many of the heroic guilds, especially Fairy Tail itself, function like an extended family. The series also has an optimistic tone with many characters who start off as antagonists eventually being redeemed. In writing his characters, Mashima based a lot of their personality traits and quirks on the people close to him as well as himself. One character, Jason, is an insert of a real life person, comics writer and anime/manga journalist Jason Thompson. The series has been successful both financially and critically. In 2011, Fairy Tail became the 4th best selling manga in Japan (by series). In 2009, it won Kodansha Manga Award for Shounen Manga. It also won the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation's Industry Award for Best Comedy the same year. In 2010, it won Animax Asia's "Anime of the Year" award in 2010 and in 2012, the anime won Meilleur Anime Japonais and the best French dubbing award at the 19th Anime & Manga Grand Prix in Paris, France. The manga series received a sequel titled Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest, which debuted on July 25, 2018 and was again written by Mashima. However, Ueda_Atsuko illustrated the manga this time while Mashima focused his attention on his other concurrently running manga Edens Zero. Not to be confused with fairy_tale.
