Sequel that is notable for being significantly different from past Resident_Evil games, shifting from survival horror to third person shooter action/horror. It drops the fixed camera angles, the camera is now placed behind the player character's shoulder. It introduced quick time events where the player had to press a button that would show up in the middle of cutscene or end up getting killed. It also replaced zombies with a new breed of enemy, the Ganados. The game was the most financially successful games in the franchise, selling 7.03 million copies across all platforms by July 2011 and also holds the record of best selling horror game in the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records Gamer Edition. It has had a large influence on subsequent horror and third person shooter games like Dead Space, many of which adopt the over the shoulder view this game used. This game was also directed by series creator Mikami Shinji and to date is the last Resident Evil game he was involved with. The game was produced by Kobayashi Hiroyuki. Hirabayashi_Yoshiaki, Akimoto_Yuichi, and Hattori_Yoshifumi. The story was written by Mikami and Murata Haruo. The soundtrack was composed by Senbongi Misao and Uchiyama Shusaku. It was released on January 11, 2005 for the Gamecube and has been ported to the Playstation 2 and Wii. Mikami intended the game to be Gamecube exclusive and was adamant about this view, claiming, in an interview with a Japanese magazine, that he would commit harakiri, which was translated as cut off his own head, if the game was ported. He didn't follow through on his claim, but his next game, God Hand, made reference to it by featuring a racing dog named, "Mikami's Head." He still stands by his belief that the game should've been Gamecube exclusive and felt bad for anyone who bought the game on Gamecube without knowing that it would eventually be ported to the PS2. The game also recycles some music from Mikami's previous Gamecube game PN03. This game also features the series staple Mercenary minigame in which the player takes out as many enemies as s/he can to earn high scores. This game's incarnation of the mode that proved to be very popular and became the template for subsequent Resident Evil games culminating in Capcom eventually releasing a game that consisted solely of the Mercenary game titled Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D. Taking place seven years after the previous games, Leon S. Kennedy has become a US government agent. He is sent to an unnamed area in Spain to rescue Ashley Graham, the US President's daughter, from the evil cult Los Illuminados. There he meets the new breed of enemy, Ganados, which he soon learns from scientist Luis Sera, are being controlled by a parasite known as Las Plagas which controls their minds. Leon is soon infected with the parasite and must rescue Ashley, defeat Los Illuminados, and cure himself before he becomes one of the Ganados. The Playstation 2 release added new features to the game and fixes some glitches in the original. One of the new features is a canon playable story mode written by Murata Haruo called Separate Ways starring Ada Wong. This story mode shows what Ada was doing off screen during main Resident Evil 4 story. It is also possible for Ada to see and hear Leon at a few moments, but she can't interact with him as that would contradict the main story. The game is also notable for its developers taking a long time to decide on what direction the game should go in. The game was initially conceived of on December 1999 and Kamiya Hideki who directed Resident Evil 2 was going to return to direct. However, what he and his team were coming up with was deemed to be too different from Resident Evil and this game Kamiya was working on would eventually become Devil May Cry. Two more prototypes of Resident Evil 4 were created and were even shown to the gaming public like the 'fog' version and the 'hooked man' version for the game were radically different from the final game. There was also a fourth prototype that featured the return of zombies that was not shown to the gaming public and scrapped due to being too similar to past games. Like the other Resident Evil games, the game has a strong cinematic influence. In the case of this game, the 2001 Lovecraftian horror film Dagon is the largest influence. The game has a similar premise and setting as that film and the Merchant strongly resembles a villager from said film. The game's dialogue is in both English and un-subtitled Spanish for all regions including its native Japan. Like the previous numbered Resident Evil games, it received a remake that adopts a similar darker and even more horror-focused tone that the previous remakes had.
