It was released for Gamecube on November 12, 2002 and is directed by Oda Koji and is written by Sugimura Noboru, Nakamoto Hiromichi, and Miyashita Junichi. The soundtrack was composed by Kobuochi Seiko. The game was originally developed for the Nintendo 64. but the game was pushed back for further development. For the most part, the final product is similar to the prototype albeit with better graphics due to the superior technology of the Gamecube and a slightly different outfit for Rebecca. The concept of a prequel to Resident Evil even predated the official release of the original game. Rebecca Chambers and Bravo Team are assigned to investigate some murders in the mountains. They discover an overturned van whose passengers except one have been brutally killed. They learn that the surviving passenger is Billy Coen, an infamous convict who has been given a death sentence for killing twenty-three people. Rebecca discovers and boards a broken down train in the middle of the woods. She encounters Billy who rescues her from a leech zombie attack. Although Rebecca is still suspicious of Billy, she takes up Billy's offer to work together. The two of them spend one long night battling the mysterious Dr. James Marcus and his monstrous creations. Although previous Resident Evil games features multiple main characters, this game had the two of them working side-by-side for the majority of the game. Switching between the two of them and using them both is an important gameplay mechanic. It is so far the last 'traditional' fixed camera Resident Evil game before the series would receive a large overhaul in style with Resident Evil 4. The game's story was retold in Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles. It also received a novel adaptation by S.D. Perry called Resident Evil: Zero Hour and is so far the last Resident Evil game to receive an adaptation by Perry. The game received generally positive reviews and sold 1.25 million copies worldwide.
