Now Viewing: tekkenTag type: Copyright (鉄拳) Covers the entire series. Popular 3D fighting game franchise developed by Namco. The title translates to Iron Fist. The original game debuted in 1994 at the arcades. Like Virtua Fighter, most of the characters' fighting styles are based off of real life martial arts styles although the combat is still exaggerated in that characters can juggle their opponents while performing combos and in gameplay can shrug off devastating injuries like having their neck snapped or being impaled by a chainsaw. The series also likes to include more outrageous characters like Kuma, a bear that knows martial arts, alongside the fighters with fighting styles based off of real life martial arts. Unlike Virtua Fighter, there are no ring outs; the fight ends when one character loses all of their health or time runs out. The series has even influenced real life martial artists. MMA fighter Uriah Hall has cited the games as an influence on him and he even uses the games for training. The numbered games in the series are considered canon and advance the main storyline. The games' universe has also experienced some time skips: Tekken 3 is set 19 years after Tekken 2 and Tekken 4 is set 2 years after Tekken 3. Some of the recurring characters have noticeably aged and some have been replaced with younger counterparts. The Tekken Tag Tournament sub series is not exactly canon, but is notable for bringing virtually every Tekken character to date into one game. The home console version of the second Tag Tournament game even brings back characters that have been absent from the series for a long time like Forest Law, Kunimitsu, and Tiger Jackson. It also has a different style of gameplay from the main series. Matches are 2 vs 2, but the round ends when one of the team members on either side gets knocked out so players must switch between and use both fighters effectively. The home console releases of the games add new features like mini games. One common feature is a beat em up style game featuring the Tekken cast, a feature first introduced in Tekken 3 with Tekken Force, which returned in Tekken 4. Tekken 5 included a similar mode called Devil Within, but it was more story driven and Kazama Jin was the only playable character. Tekken 6's beat em up mode, Scenario Campaign, also doubles as a story mode for the game. Tekken has received a spin-off starring Nina Williams titled Death by Degrees. Characters Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law are also guest fighters in the Namco 3d beat-em-up Urban Reign. Lars Alexandersson is also a guest fighter in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2. Unlike many fighting games with an international cast, the series makes an effort to have most of its characters speak their native language with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 being the most prominent example of this. Characters like Christie and Lili who previously spoke English were now voiced in Portugese and French respectively. The series is also well known for its electronic soundtracks composed by various members of the Namco's in-house musicians. It has received an anime adaptation in 1998, a live action movie in 2010, and a canon CG movie titled Tekken: Blood Vengeance directed by Mouri Youichi.
