Tag is only used for images specifically referencing this spinoff. The original game debuted in 1992 for the Super Nintendo. In contrast to F-Zero, it was designed with a focus on multiplayer. The franchise's battle mode was created to create a multiplayer mode where victory was not determined by rank. The game originally was intended to be an original work separate from the Mario franchise. However, the developers decided that Mario worked better than the original designs the developers came up with so the game was made into Mario spinoff. Gameplay, even in the SNES original which used Mode 7 graphics to create a psuedo 3d look, uses a third person perspective where the camera is placed behind the player character at all times until the race's conclusion. The franchise is famous for introducing the use of items during races. Characters can use mushrooms as boosts and banana peels, shells, lightning bolts, etc. as weapons. Players who are falling behind are more likely to get more powerful items allowing them to make a potential comeback. The race courses, which are often based on locations inspired by other Mario games, themselves are often dangerous and filled with hazards like pits, Thwomps, Chain Chomps, etc. that will slow down the player. Due to these elements, races can get extremely chaotic and unpredictable. These innovations have influenced subsequent racing games like Diddy Kong Racing, Snowboard Kids, etc. The series also has a tradition of having the final race course be Rainbow Road (generally a rainbow road hovering in space). This race course is usually (Mario Kart 64 being a major exception) one of the more difficult ones to navigate in each game. While F-Zero has very different gameplay from this series, F-Zero has homaged Mario Kart with the inclusion of its own take on the series' trademark Rainbow Road in F-Zero X complete with a metal remix of the Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road theme. The series also includes multiple difficulty modes: 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc with the last being the most difficult. There is also an Extra mode where the AI is as aggressive as it is in 150cc, but all the race courses are mirrored. In race courses featuring traffic, this means that you will also be driving against traffic when playing extra mode. In Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 7, there is also a rival system in grand prix mode. Depending on which character the player picks, the game automatically designates one specific character to be the player's rival and the rival will be much more aggressive and difficult to beat than the other racers. Although the games are all developed by Nintendo, third party developers have also contributed to the production of some of the games like Mario Kart Super Circuit (with Intelligent Systems) Mario Kart GP (arcade only with Namco), and Mario Kart 7 (with Retro Studios) All of the games also feature a battle mode where, instead of racing each other, players use the items to destroy each other. Balloons represent the player's health. In the main game, the player's car will never be destroyed no matter how much damage a player takes in one race but getting damaged will slow the player down.
