His life is turned into a living hell once Dio Brando ends up living in the Joestar mansion with him. Jonathan's father takes a liking to Dio and does not notice Dio tormenting Jonathan. For the early parts of Part 1, Jonathan is unable to do much about Dio, but he becomes much stronger after he grows up and is eventually able to put a good fight with him. He also learns the Ripple technique from Will Zeppeli, which is very effective against vampires. He also develops a romantic relationship with Erina Pendleton and a strong friendship with Robert E.O. Speedwagon after the two of them fought.
