Now Viewing: clampTag type: Artist A highly successful group of female mangaka. As of October 2007, over 100 million copies of Clamp's work have been sold internationally. They began as an 11 eleven member doujinshi group in the 1980s before moving on to original works in 1987 and have been consistently creating manga since then. They made their manga debut with RG Veda. Their numbers have decreased over the years. Currently, there are only four members, Ohkawa Nanase, Mokona, Nekoi Tsukasa, Igarashi Satsuki. Their portfolio is eclectic and they have written manga of wildly different genres, tones, and demographics. They have stated that they like to come up with a new theme for each manga they create. Although their manga are quite different from each other, there are common trademarks. Their characters, both male and female, are beautiful and wear elaborate clothes. They also believe in the idea that love transcends all boundaries so many of their series have character relationships that can be considered unconventional. Their series often feature character relationships with a strong homoerotic subtext and at times, explicitly homosexual relationships (though there is no pornographic sex). However, they don't see love as being the central theme in their works although it is still important. Ohkawa states that she believes that women grow and change when they put their lives on the line. Their series are closely related to each other. Characters from past series will often cameo in, and in some instances, play important roles in their current stories. Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles is the ultimate example of this tendency. As their members are part of the same group, the women of CLAMP all share the same office. Usually, Ohkawa acts as the spokesperson of the group as well as the producer-director and storyboarder. Mokona handles the character designs. Igarashi and Nekoi handle the background art. However, the roles each member play are not set in stone and they have swapped roles before. They have no assistants because they feel that they are already very accustomed to working with each other and assistants would not understand the terminology they often use. All of the members have never acted as assistants to other mangaka. While they have attended art classes, their artistic ability is otherwise self-taught. Their writing process usually goes like this: Ohkawa comes up with the basic concept of the story and the women discuss the story together. After an outline has been formed, the story's setting and ending are established and the basic character designs are conceived. After submitting their work to the editor and receiving approval, Ohkawa assigns the other members various roles determines the work's visual aesthetic as well as crafting rough drafts. Many of their works have been adapted into anime. They have also contributed character designs to anime like Code Geass and Blood-C but they did not write the story for the former.
