Now Viewing: bloomersTag type: General Bloomers are a type of women's underwear constructed much like boxer shorts. Most bloomers, unlike boxers, are gathered at the bottom of the legs. Often bloomers will be decorated with ribbons or ruffles at the waist and legs. Bloomers are considered less private than panties, but are still regarded as underwear. They were adapted by Elizabeth Smith Miller from Middle Eastern garments such as the so-called harem_pants (a.k.a. şalvar/shalwar/patiala salwar/dimije/sirwal/sharovary) and popularized in the United States by her cousin Amelia Bloomer, after whom they are named. Contrast with buruma, an English to Japanese to English translation of bloomer, usually identifying an over-panties, or a public garment whose purpose is to cover the panties and crotch area while leaving the maximum flexibility. In Japanese bloomers are sometimes translated as "pumpkin pantsu" ('pumpkin panties') (see Soul_Eater episode 40.)
