Normally, the gameplay revolves around dungeon crawling and turn-based battles utilizing demons, monsters, and deities from real world mythology. Shin Megami Tensei is the main series with several spinoffs which include the Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner, and Persona series. The main series is known for its dark story lines and extreme difficulty. They players typically play as a silent character/avatar and are given the choice of alignments and factions s/he wishes to pursue. These alignments are: Law, Chaos (Lucifer), or neither of them. The games are notably set in a contemporary Japan as opposed to a fantasy world unlike many JRPGs, which made the original Shin Megami Tensei unique when it was first released.
