It was adapted into an anime TV series by Gonzo in 2005. The series is set in a world similar to the real world when the series was created. However, a secret organization known as Chronos controls one third of the world economy. The organization has a special group of elite hitmen known as the Numbers who are sent to eliminate various targets in the name of world peace. The organization also has many high ranking politicians in their ranks and it wields so much power that if the organization were to collapse, the entire world will fall into chaos. Protagonist Train Heartnet was one of the elite Chronos Numbers in his past, but he has severed ties with them and has formed a sweeper business along with former federal agent Sven Vollfied. He was known as Black Cat and his superhuman skills with guns were considered legendary. Thanks to the influence of a close friend he made while he was still a hit man, Train has decided to give up killing and follow his own sense of morality. Although Train is much happier with his current life than he was as an assassin, his former employers and coworkers are displeased with his decision, especially former Chronos assassin Creed Diskenth. Creed has betrayed Chronos and has formed his own organization called the Apostles of the Stars. He wants to destroy Chronos and form a new world order and he is determined to get Train to go back to killing and join his side. . . The series was Yabuki's first major success. He transplanted the character Tearju Lunatique into his next series To Love-ru although the two series are not in the same continuity. Her appearance and voice actress are the same in both incarnations. The character Eve became the basis for the To Love-ru character Konjiki no Yami who shares Eve's appearance, powers, and voice actress.
