It is directed by Imaishi_Hiroyuki. Its characters are designed by Nishigori_Atsushi. The electronic soundtrack is composed by Takahashi Taku of the group m-flo and Teddyloid. Besides the main series, there is also an OVA called Panty & Stocking in Sanitarybox that features eight short episodes. Panty and Stocking Anarchy are two angel sisters who have been sent by Heaven to work with priest Garterbelt to protect Daten City from evil demons known as Ghosts. Despite the girls' status as angels, they are as far as angelic as possible. While the two of them fight to protect humanity, they are decidedly hedonistic and ironically openly behave very sinfully and were kicked out of heaven because of their behavior. Panty is obsessed with sex while Stocking with food. Both of them spend as much time bickering with each other and causing collateral damage as they do with saving the day. The series follows the various misadventures the angels get into. The series is often considered to be one of the most over the top and outrageous anime Gainax has produced. The show's wackiness is also the result of the creators being drunk when they came up with the basic concepts; after the staff finished Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, they went on a vacation and while they were drinking and having fun, they came up with the premise of the series. It is also unusual amongst Japanese animation series in that it is heavily and openly inspired by North American animation complete with numerous references to North American pop culture. The series' creation was inspired by the 2004 series Drawn Together, and the creators wanted to create an anime with similarly audacious envelope pushing humor. It has an abnormal amount of English dialogue and profanity for a Japanese TV series. When the series was localized in English, the creators encouraged the dubbers to add even more profanity because the creators wanted to know more English curse words. The localizers followed the creators' wishes and subsequently, the English dub has even more swearing. Besides the frequent profanity, the series is filled with lots of sexual innuendo and imagery and even toilet humor. The prevalent sexual innuendo is also present on the series soundtrack with many of the song names being sexual references; some of the songs have very sexual lyrics and even orgasmic moaning. The series adopts a mostly episodic structure and most episodes consist of two halves which tell a short story. The series frequently shifts art style. The series has two main looks. The first look gives the characters large heads and somewhat skinny bodies. The second style appears during the series' fan service moments; the series switches to a sexier art style, closer to GAINAX's usual style during the 2000s, where the characters gain more distinct figures and bodies that are closer in proportion to an actual person. Both of these styles are often imitated and parodied in fan art with characters from other anime drawn in place of the original characters. The series is notably the last anime many of the series' creators would work on while at GAINAX. Director Imaishi left GAINAX and founded Studio Trigger with Otsuka Masahiko who also worked on this series. Quite a few GAINAX animators including Yoshinari_You joined them at the new company. Character designer Nishigori went on to direct the second Idolmaster anime adaptation at A-1 Pictures. Fans often clamored for a second season to the series, especially because the series was infamous for ending on a major open-ended cliffhanger that had no resolution except for a short Imaishi-penned doujin/unofficial sequel titled Geek Boy which takes place after the 1st season's twist ending and ties it to Uchuu Patrol Luluco., but it was thought to be impossible, in spite of the creators' interest in doing a sequel, due to the rights to the series being owned by GAINAX while the series' actual creative team moved on to Trigger. However, in 2021, Studio Khara bought the rights to the IP from GAINAX and Trigger eventually got the IP rights themselves along with the rights to another series the creative team worked on when they were at GAINAX, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. This decision allowed Trigger to make the long awaited second season to the series, which was announced at the Anime Expo 2022 and reunites the cast and crew of the first season.
