The original game was released in 1998 and created by Hudson Soft for the Nintendo 64 and popularized the party or mini game based game. It is the longest running mini-game series and has sold 39.6 million copies by December 2014. The series combined a board game format with mini games which come in all sorts of playstyles. Players compete with each other to collect the most Power Stars by earning coins through mini game victories so that they can purchase more Stars. The player with the most stars at the end of the main game wins. Players can lose Stars or be hindered by the boards' obstacles. The players can also exploit the boards' mechanics to their advantage as well as hinder other players. With all of the myriad obstacles of the boards and the presence of some luck-based mini games, an average Mario Party game can become highly unpredictable. Although a player can play the game by himself or herself and the games includes single player modes, the game is designed to be enjoyed with friends and family. In spite of this, the franchise has picked up a memetic tongue-in-cheek reputation as being a friendship destroyer due to the players quickly creating a highly competitive atmosphere while playing the game and the game's mechanics making sabotaging other players a highly probable occurrence as well as an effective strategy. Nintendo itself has acknowledged the franchise's reputation and has even advertised Mario Party 10 by declaring that "the friendship wrecker returns!" Like many Mario spinoffs, the games were very financially successful and became a sub series by itself, though unlike the main Mario games, the franchise has received a more mixed reception from critics. The fourth Mario Party game also established Peach and Daisy's present designs. The series is well known for releasing a large quantity of entries within a short period of time. As a result, Mario Party ties with Mario Kart as the Mario spinoff series with the most games. It also spawned a spiritual successor in Wii Party. Unlike most competitive Mario games, all of the characters have the same stats in this series.
