The visual novel is available in both a H version and a non-H version. It was written by Hisaki Naoki and Maeda Jun. The soundtrack was composed by Maeda, OdiakeS, and Orito Shinji. The characters were designed by Hinoue_Itaru. It has been adapted into anime twice, once by Toei in 2002 and the second time by Kyoto_Animation in 2006. The first anime series was directed by Itou Naoyuki and written by Nakamura Makoto and Yamaguchi Ryouta with characters designed by Ohnishi_Youichi. It featured an original soundtrack composed by Kozu Hiroyuki and Ito Michihiro. The second anime series was directed by Ishihara Tatsuya and written by Shimo Fumihiko with characters designed by Ikeda_Kazumi, all of whom worked on the previous Kyoto Animation adaptation of Key's work, Air. Like Air, Kanon 2006 reuses music from the original visual novel and remix albums. It has also been adapted into manga and light novels. Aizawa Yuuichi returns to the city where his relatives, Minase Akiko and Minase Nayuki, live after seven years. Outside of his relative, he doesn't remember much about the last time he was in the city. He stays with the Minases and attends the local high school. There, he meets the stoic outcast Kawasumi Mai and Misaka Shiori. Outside of school, he also becomes acquainted with an eccentric taiyaki loving girl named Tsukumiya Ayu and the mischievous prankster Sawatari Makoto who has a grudge against him. As Yuuichi gets to know these girls and helps them with their problems, he begins to recover his memories of the last time he was in the city. . . The story arcs in the original visual novel are disconnected and separate from each other, but both anime adaptations combine them to form one storyline. The visual novel was very successful and established Key as a visual novel producer. The visual novel sold over 300,000 copies across several platforms. It was spiritually succeeded by Air and CLANNAD, which form a seasonal trilogy with Kanon with Kanon taking place in the winter, Air taking place in the summer, and CLANNAD taking place mostly in the Spring.
