Comedic toku-inspired beat em up platformer/character action game series developed by Clover Studios. It was published by Capcom. The original game was released in 2003 for the Nintendo Gamecube and was part of the Capcom 5, 5 games which were meant to be Gamecube exclusives. It is also the first game developed by Clover Studios/Platinum Games and exhibits many of their trademarks like combat grading, extreme difficulty, and over the top action paired with tongue in cheek humor. The first game was directed by Kamiya_Hideki and produced by Inaba Atsushi. The artwork was done by Suekane_Kimiko. Music was composed by Ueda Masumi and Sugimori Masakazu, the latter even reuses a track from his Gyakuten Saiban 1 soundtrack. The second game was directed by Yamada Masaaki, produced by Inaba and has music composed by Morita Sayaka and Ueda Masami. Kamiya wrote the second game's story. Like the Devil May Cry games, the game's voice acting is in English. It has also been adapted into an anime TV series which was the first time the games' characters spoke in Japanese. Joe is a massive film buff and superhero/tokusatsu fan watching a Captain Blue action movie with his girlfriend Sylvia, when suddenly the villain of the film reaches through the movie screen and snatches Sylvia. Joe himself is dragged into the movie by Captain Blue's mecha. Once inside the film, Joe gets to live out his dream. He becomes a toku hero named Viewtiful Joe who gets to fight bad guys under the guidance of his idol Captain Blue. Joe embarks on a quest to rescue his girlfriend, but discovers that he and Sylvia aren't the only ones from the real world who have been dragged into the movie world. . . The games use a cel-shading giving the game a cartoonish comic book-esque look. The characters are also designed with short legs and large heads. The graphics are in 3D, but gameplay is in 2D. The games are very difficult and require the player to strategically utilize the V-watch that gives Joe his powers. The VFX powers can give Joe the ability to slow down time allowing the player to dodge or throw back projectiles and increases the power of Joe's attacks, Mach Speed which makes Joe move faster and can also make Joe immune to fire, and a Zoom in power which causes the camera to zoom in on Joe which powers him up and gives him more attacks. Any two powers can be combined, but if the VFX gauge runs out, Joe loses his toku outfit and temporarily goes back to the weaker normal Joe. As the games are predominantly set within a fictional movie and star a movie-loving hero, there are many references to movies and Joe's powers resemble visual tricks done in movies. The games tend to throw a boss rush at the end with the first game's being infamously difficult. Although the games are humorous in tone they tend to grow more serious at their climaxes which involve a large scale mecha battle between Joe and the villain, followed by a hand to hand fight. The games also includes many references to Devil May Cry, also created by Kamiya Hideki. Dante himself is a playable character in the Playstation 2 port of the game as well as Alastor, a personification of a sword that Dante acquired in the first game. Trish also appears as well. Notably, Dante's voice acting in the game consists of Dante's lines of Devil May Cry 1 being played backwards. The series was originally intended to be a trilogy and Viewtiful Joe 2 continues directly after the original's ending. However, a third game has yet to be produced because Clover Studios shut down after Ookami was released and series creator Kamiya Hideki is no longer with Capcom, even though he is interested in completing it, leaving the series ending on a cliffhanger. The other games in the series, Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble and Red Hot Rumble, don't continue the story. The first game received generally positive reviews but sold less copies than expected though producer Inaba still considered the game to be a financial success as the game's budget was small to begin with. The game is also the first example of a recurring trend with the reception of Clover Studios/Platinum Games games; their games will often receive good reviews and praise from the relatively small group of people who played them but will often sell less than expected. Nevertheless, the series has been represented in Capcom's crossover games. Viewtiful Joe is a playable character in Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom 3. Silvia also appears in both but as a non-playable character. This game ended up being the start of Kamiya's Hero Trilogy, a trio of Kamiya directed character action games that are homages to Japanese style superheroes. Kamiya and Platinum Games would develop two spiritual successors to this game, The Wonderful 101 and Project G.G.
