It is a 2D/3D platformer that was released on November 11, 2011 for the PlayStation 3, XBOX360, and PC. A version of the game with some different levels was released on the Nintendo 3DS. Classic Sonic stages are in 2D while Modern Sonic stages are in 3D. It was directed by Miyamoto Hiroshi, and was written by Warren Graff and Ken Pontac who previously wrote Sonic Colors and gave this game a similar lighthearted tone that pokes fun at itself. The game's art was handled by Kawamura Sachiko, and the score was written by series regular composer Senoue Jun. The game celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Sonic franchise and compiles/remakes the most popular levels and boss fights from the main Sonic platformer games into this game. Each stage has a Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic design, and there are missions involving the other characters in the Sonic series. It also includes remade versions of final boss fights and rival fights from the series. The soundtrack includes many remixes of Sonic themes from throughout the series. Ironically, the game itself is the only 3D Sonic game to not have an official vocal theme song though it does have many remixes of past Sonic vocal themes. In the game's universe, it is also Sonic's birthday and almost every good guy, and neutral characters like Shadow and Rouge, shows up to celebrate it. Unfortunately, a mysterious demonic being known as the Time Eater interrupts the party and separates everyone. The Time Eater also disrupts time and Sonic finds himself revisiting some of the levels he had conquered in the past. He soon meets Classic Sonic, established in this game as his younger self, and the two Sonics team up to reunite Sonic with his friends and stop the Time Eater. The game received generally positive critical reviews, a notable rarity in its era of the franchise history where each game often received mixed reviews even though they still sold very well. 13 years after its debut, the game received a remaster on October 25, 2024 that was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. However, the remaster isn't the same game but with graphical updates, it adds a brand new story mode where the players can play as Shadow, giving the remaster the name Sonic x Shadow Generations. Shadow Generations was directed by Shigihara Katsuyuki and Kobayashi Yuka. The artwork was handled by Matate Keiichi. Lifelong Sonic fan and comic writer Ian Flynn, who previously wrote Sonic Frontiers, wrote the story for this new mode. Fitting its protagonist and Flynn's signature approach to the Sonic franchise, the new story mode is more serious in tone with fewer self-deprecating jokes than the original base game and incorporates many references to past Sonic franchise lore. The base game is mostly the same but some dialogue has notably been changed to be more consistent with recent entries. Like the original release, the remaster received generally positive critical reviews and was financially successful, selling 1 million copies upon debut.
