It is a hack and slash game released on June 3, 2008 for the XBOX 360 and is a sequel to the XBOX Ninja Gaiden. It was created by the same developers as the previous game. The game is set one year after the XBOX Ninja Gaiden. CIA agent Sonia informs Ryu Hayabusa that the Black Spider Ninja Clan plans to steal the Demon Statue from the Hayabusa Village. Upon returning to his village, Ryu finds that his father and the village has been attacked and Statue stolen and in the possession of Elizabet who Ryu had previously rescued Sonia from. Ryu teams up with Sonia and pursues Elizabet around the world to foil her plans. The game puts greater emphasis on fast-paced combat than its predecessor and is accordingly much bloodier with Ryu being able to literally cut his opponents into pieces. The player is actually encouraged to do so as even enemies who are missing limbs but are not quite dead can still harm the player. Like the rest of the series, the game is extremely difficult. There are also far more enemies for the player to deal with and in some cases, there can be so many that the console can struggle to keep up with the gameplay. The game was well received critically and financially, selling 1.1 million copies by December 2008. However, it was the last DOA/Ninja Gaiden that director Itagaki Tomonobu worked on as he resigned from Tecmo shortly before the game's release and formed his own studio. The game was ported/remastered twice. While each incarnation has the same story, each version of the game has its own quirks. The first remake was Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, which was released on September 29, 2009. This version of the game upgrades 3 previously non-playable characters to playable: Ayane_(doa), Rachel_(Ninja_Gaiden), and Momiji_(Ninja_Gaiden) who have their own missions that act as side stories to Ryu's adventure. While it retains the dismemberment heavy combat of the original, it censors the gore by changing the blood to a purple mist. It also reduces the amount of enemies on screen while adding some new giant bosses for Ryu to fight. This game was generally well received by the public although series creator Itagaki disowned it. The second remaster, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black was part of the Ninja Gaiden franchise revival in 2025, and was released on January 23, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. This incarnation was directed by Sato Shuhei and is largely based off of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 with updated graphics, but reverts Sigma 2's censorship of the gore. It also removes the giant boss fights that Sigma 2 introduced and adds more enemies in regular combat but not as many as the original NG2. The game introduces Sonia who plays a very similar role as Irene Lew did in the NES Ninja Gaiden games. Her role is so similar that the developers have later confirmed that Sonia is a redesigned Irene Lew and she returns in Dead or Alive Dimensions albeit redesigned to fit in with that game's artstyle. Introduces: Irene_Lew originally named Sonia but later confirmed to be the same female lead as the NES NG games.
