Prior to the release of the first episode, there were four trailers, each of which focus on one of the main characters, released to introduce the main characters with the first premiering on November 5, 2012. It was Oum's first major series with original characters albeit ones inspired by fairy tales. It was written primarily by Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross, following the extensive plot outline Oum laid out. They became the primary showrunners after Oum's passing on February 1, 2015. The title is pronounced ruby and it is spelled as RWBY in all caps. The letters stand for the main characters of the series. The soundtrack was composed by Jeff Williams with vocals performed by his daughter Casey Lee Williams, Sandra Casey, and Lamar Hall. The characters were designed by Oum and Einlee. The creators used Smith Micro's Poser Software to animate the series. It is set in a fairy tale inspired world where humans live alongside monsters and human/animal hybrids. Humans in this world have had to constantly fight against monsters from the darkness throughout history. To combat these creatures, humans have developed a magic source called Dust which has turned out to be highly effective. Thanks to Dust, humans have been able to build civilizations and schools are formed to train boys and girls to become hunters to fight against the monsters. These advancements prove to be highly successful in fighting the Grimm leading to an age of relative peace. Ruby Rose is a talented teen warrior who aspires to become a huntress. After she foils a robbery, she is selected to join Beacon Academy which trains students to become hunters to defend humanity from the Grimm. Ruby becomes the leader of Team RWBY, which consists of herself, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. As they advance in their training, the girls learn about more about the world and conflicts that adult hunters have to deal with. They come to realize that the world they live in is more fragile than it seems and find themselves facing foes who threaten to push the world's already precarious state into chaos. . . Besides the elaborately choreographed action that Oum was famous for, this series is notable for its cast of characters using special weapons that have more than one function. For example, heroine Ruby uses a scythe that also doubles as a powerful gun with a recoil strong enough to fling her backwards, she uses the scythe both to kill enemies and as an anchor whenever she fires her gun. The series has a strong emphasis on color. The main characters' names are allusions to color and the trailers to the series often had a few dominant colors in the animation. The series was immensely successful and became Rooster Teeth's main flagship franchise besides Red vs. Blue. In 2014, the series won the award for Best Animated Series from the International Academy of Web Television association. At the 2014 Streamy Awards, the series also won the awards for Best Animated Series and Best Score. The series' increasing popularity changed the casting decisions for the characters. Characters in the early seasons were generally played by Rooster Teeth employees, many of whom were new to voice acting. Later seasons cast English voice actors famous for their work in dubbing anime. It was also the first work by RT to receive a significant amount of Japanese attention. It received an official dub with the characters played by well known Japanese seiyuu, and received multiple manga adaptations. Team RWBY and Neo were included as playable fighters in the crossover fighting game Blazblue Cross Tag. Rooster Teeth themselves expanded on the franchise by releasing RWBY Chibi, a comedic spinoff, a video game side story called RWBY Grimm Eclipse, various novels, and the World of Remnant, which runs concurrently with the main series and further fleshes out the show's setting. The series has also been adapted into both Japanese manga and American comics. In 2022, the series received a Japanese anime TV series adaptation called RWBY Icequeendom. This adaptation reunites the Japanese dub cast of the original web animation and is animated by Shaft. It is directed by Suzuki Toshimasa, written by Ubukata Tou and its characters were designed by huke. The soundtrack is composed by Toda Nobuko and Jinnouchi Kazuma.
